Preface

This manual contains an introduction for getting started with SPRANNLIB gif for novice users, and a complete reference manual of SPRANNLIB functions for advanced users of the library. The authors would like to point out that there are also manual pages available on Unix systems. However, these page merely describe the general purpose of SPRANNLIB functions whereas the reference manual supplies the user with detailed function information of all SPRANNLIB functions. Furthermore, the library uses a few Numerical Recipes in C functions which are copyrighted and are therefore not described in detail and are not part of the library source distribution.

This work was sponsored by the Dutch Government as a part of the SPIN-FLAIR-DIAC project, and by the Foundation of Computer Science in the Netherlands (SION) with financial support from the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). Furthermore A. Ypma, J.D. van Setten, B.N. Venlet and C.M.M. Nieuwenhuize are gratefully acknowledged for their contributions to the library and documentation.

This second edition, of March 1998, was printed mainly since a new version (3.1) of SPRANNLIB was released. This new version contains some bug fixes and additions, such as the wavelet network, Sammon mapping and a neural network to perform Sammon mapping, a modular neural network construction routine and some extensions to the shared weights networks recipe format. We would like to thank Onno Speekenbrink for creating a WIN32 Makefile.
